Predictions and Odds between Richmond vs. Providence for the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

The Richmond Spiders made their first debacle of the tournament on Thursday, knocking out the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 12 vs. Many had assumed that Iowa had to pick a black horse to run in this year’s tournament, but we were once again shown that we should expect the unexpected in March.

The Spiders will now face Providence Friars from the Big East in Round 32. Providence survived the scare from the State of South Dakota, but finished the job with a 66-57 effort.

Sometimes you have to adjust the hot team, and right now, Richmond might be the hottest team in the NCAA Tournament. They remind me of last year’s Oregon State team. In both cases, the team had to run the group in their respective conference tournaments to make it to the big dance, both were awarded the 12th seed, and both caused an upset that No one saw came in the first round.

Oregon State’s Cinderella run ended in Elite 8, and I think Richmond has a legitimate chance to outdo it. They played solidly defensively in this game and did not turn the tables, ranking 11th in rotations per possession. Those are two important factors for a dark horse run.

Providence ended up taking down South Dakota State, but they didn’t look really strong in the match. In fact, their effective goalscoring rate in the past three games is 5% below the season average. This time, they won’t be able to bully their opponents at a low level like they did with Jackrabbit.
