Predictions and odds between Butler vs. St. Johns (Red Storm to Continue Rain)

It won’t be at the Mecca of basketball this afternoon, but the Carnesecca Arena in Queens, NY will kick off college basketball on Friday when St. John’s Red Storm hosts Butler Bulldogs in the Big East to compete.

St. John’s needed a win in the worst way, and had a nasty win down the road at Xavier on Wednesday night. Julian Champagnie drops 27 points as Red Storm shoots 54% off the floor.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are starting to gain confidence in the ball attack, having beaten Marquette and DePaul by 85 and 73 points respectively in the last two matches.

Can Butler win three in a row for the first time since mid-December? Or St. John’s will win their big road to climbing back into contention.

The line moved slightly during the Friday afternoon open, up from 141 and I wouldn’t be surprised if it continues to rise like today.

St. John’s makes no secret that they love to play basketball at a pace. They ranked fourth nationally for adjusted pace and second for average possession duration of just 14.7 seconds. Are they the most effective offense? No, and that could get them in trouble against teams that don’t like to get up to speed. Case and point? Their 63-60 loss on Sunday to Connecticut; their lowest total score since January 22.

Butler, however, has the look of a team like Connecticut or Seton Hall, two teams that have kept St. John’s with their lowest overall score in the Big East game. They rank near the bottom of college basketball for average possession time and have a defense in the top 100.

However, in the last two matches, they played extremely effectively. Against Marquette, the Bulldogs have scored a season-high 28 three-pointers, accounting for 13 of them by just under 47% of the 85-79 win. Against DePaul, they’re extremely effective inside, firing 20-31 from inside the row, fine tuning when three trees aren’t falling, and looking to get inside looks.

Both of these teams will want to align strongly because that’s what is working well for them and I see more offensive products today.

The last time these two teams played, Butler lost only 3 in a 75-72 loss at Indianapolis. While I expect another somewhat close match, I feel more comfortable stepping back into the game as both teams seem confident about their recent offensive abilities.
