Championship week has arrived and here are some predictions for who will be hosting the tournaments in Power 5 and some other key tournaments.
College basketball season is over and Champion week has officially arrived. An additional 29 automatic bids for the NCAA Tournament will be earned over the course of the next seven days while the Selection Committee will closely monitor the action as they review to determine the 36 largest bids for March Madness.
There are a lot of conference tournaments going on or about to start, so this exercise will focus on predicting winners from the tournaments most likely to send big teams to the field: Power 5 field , Big East, Atlantic 10, American and Mountain West. Have some potential bid thief in some of these tournaments too, but we’ll start things off at AAC.
AAC Conference Tournament Prediction
- Day: March 10-13
- Position: Fort Worth, TX
- Meeting: Dickie’s Arena
- TELEVISION: ESPNU (Round 1 and QF), ESPN2 (QF and SF), ESPN (Finals)
- Top Seeds: Houston
The American ploy stems from the fact that Houston has looked vulnerable since losing Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark to season-ending injuries. The Cougars were eliminated by Memphis on Sunday as the Tigers completed a series of off-season games and Houston will most likely be picked in Fort Worth.
It doesn’t matter for Houston to reach the finals as their toughest opponent will be Tulane or Temple in the semifinals. The real plot comes in the other half of the draw, where SMU and Memphis could go head to head in the semi-finals.
Both teams are right around the edge, with Memphis being safer than SMU thanks to a better overall resume despite the Mustangs wiping out the Tigers in the regular season. SMU may need to win that game to qualify for the tournament but beating the opponent three times in a season is extremely difficult.
Whoever wins that game is likely to knock out Houston and win the Americans auto bid for the NCAA Tournament. With the heat of the Tigers, Memphis is the pick here.
