Predict what would happen if the picture of the MLB playoffs stayed the same because the season ends today.

The picture of the MLB playoffs continues to take shape. Magic numbers shrink daily. What if the season ended today?

If so, we could speed up the inevitable. There’s less than a month of regular season action left. Few teams have a logical chance to sneak into the postseason. A few others may move up a spot.

How could it go on if the postseason starts now? Let’s make some predictions.

MLB Playoffs Picture: Seattle Mariners defeat Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 in ALWC

The Seattle Mariners would have to go to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays in a best-of-three series to open things up. The Rays have been hanging around all year, but it’s the Mariners who seem to have the most momentum. That would make an interesting series. It’s hard to believe the Mariners would fall victim to the Rays, but let’s at least give Tampa Bay a win in the best-of-three contest. After all, they would have home advantage.

MLB Playoffs Picture: Cleveland Guardians defeat Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 in ALWC

The Cleveland Guardians would host the Toronto Blue Jays to begin their postseason journey. Despite having more regular-season wins than the Guardians, their powerful push at the end of 2022 would be enough to give them an advantage over Toronto. Also, let’s assume that with some walk-off magic, they win at least one in style with an extra inning win to win the series 2-1. We can give Steve Kwan the final blow.

MLB Playoffs picture: The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 in the NLWC

The St. Louis Cardinals are a very different team from the last time they faced the Philadelphia Phillies. Zack Wheeler aside, right now it’s hard to imagine Philadelphia defeating the much more powerful Cardinals team, which poses a bigger threat than most realize. It’s a sweep with a tight game and a blowout.

MLB Playoffs Picture: Atlanta Braves defeat San Diego Padres 2-1 in NLWC

Juan Soto is unsuccessful in the first game but helps the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves in the second. However, it is hardly enough. Atlanta still wins the series with a final bloodbath capped by a grand slam in the first inning. There’s no way the Braves will settle for an early rebound in the postseason. They go to the NLDS.
