If the talent of these up-and-coming teenagers is any indication, the future of MLS will be incredibly bright indeed.
In its 26th year as a competition, Major League Soccer has evolved into a league vying for global attention. Seen for a time as a retirement league for aging stars from European leagues, youth development in the United States and Canada has increased the quality of the league.
Managing a squad with a salary cap makes it important to find and develop young players with punch in the first team.
That season, Seattle Sounders became the first MLS side to win the CONCACAF Champions League, a big step for the league in competing with Liga MX in Mexico. They have shown the impact young players can have on their squad while others continue to push their academy talents in the league and shine in MLS.
Here are 10 of the most exciting teenage prospects in MLS this year with limitless potential.
10. Matai Akinmboni (DC United)
When Wayne Rooney arrived as DC United head coach, he continued the good work he had previously done at Derby County bringing young players into the first team.
The former England and Manchester United striker said playing well in training gives you your chance and he has proved he is a man of his word.
At just 15 years and 328 days, Akinmboni became the third youngest player to debut in MLS, edging out Obed Vargas in fourth place. He looked composed and mature on his debut, having just signed his contract until 2025 in August this year.
DC United have a strong history of developing young players, it is Freddy Adu who still holds the record for youngest debutant when he played for DC United aged 14 years and 334 days.
Akinmboni is a tall and composed defender who has made a huge leap in a short span of time. He has impressed his new manager who will oversee the squad before some players leave at the end of the season.
While he won’t be a regular starter now, Akinmboni will be a big part of this team’s future, especially if he continues to impress his new head coach.
