Post-deadline update is totally unsurprising

Trade rumors about Shohei Ohtani after the deadline reveal what the Los Angeles Angels’ real stance has been in recent weeks.

In the last two weeks The Shohei Ohtani trade rumors helped make many of the MLB trade deadlines headlines chatter. As it turned out, the first plane the Wright brothers put together had more of a chance of taking off than a deal for Ohtani.

Owner Arte Moreno had his front office answer the phones, but with no intention of ever really trading Ohtani away. We got the tease with no payoff.

Shohei Ohtani Trade rumors never had wings

The fact that Ohtani was ever on the trading bloc came as a surprise to many. It was spawned in part by the Washington Nationals bringing Juan Soto onto the block. The difference was that Soto was actually dealt after refusing multiple renewal offers.

The Shohei Ohtani trade rumors were in part a reaction to the availability of a young Superstar. A chain reaction ensued before the MLB trade deadline. Suddenly, many teams were listening to young and controllable assets. There were few surprises with these types of players, including Ohtani, who stayed in place.

The Angels could always change their tune in the winter. Then more teams could take part in the campaign. Also, it would make sense for a competitor to even offer multiple parts of the big league. In a pennant race, the Angels would have less chance of catching MLB players.

The Angels would certainly love to keep Ohtani, but with Mike Trout already inked to a mega deal and with losses abounding within the organization, it might be wiser to trade him for several big league plays and prospects this offseason. Eventually, he will be a free agent after the 2023 season. The Angels can’t just let him go for a draft pick.

It could have been the Juan Soto trade rumors that came true this summer. In the offseason, when Soto is expected to stay with the San Diego Padres at least until the end of his current contract, it’s the Shohei Ohtani trade rumors that will keep fans glued to the refresh button on Twitter throughout the winter.
