Possible launch of QB for the rest of spring?

The Michigan soccer team could be without quarterback-to-be JJ McCarthy through July as the former five-star recruit reportedly injured his throwing shoulder and needs surgery.

Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan football program could do without five-star sophomore quarterback JJ McCarthy for some time.

Rumors are circulating that McCarthy has sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder and will need surgery. The expectation is that he would miss all of spring training but would be back in time for fall camp in July. If there is an advantage then incumbent Cade McNamara will put all first-team representatives in an even better position to win the starting job.

While the Wolverines lost Josh Gattis to the Miami Hurricanes, Michigan promoted quarterback coach Matt Weiss from the inside to be the team’s new offensive coordinator, so there’s at least some continuity in the building when it comes to coaching the quarterbacks.

Michigan Football: JJ McCarthy has shoulder surgery and will miss spring training

The Wolverines may have had their best season in a generation, but they just didn’t have enough offensive drive to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoffs. Though McNamara was more than serviceable for Harbaugh, McCarthy is the only quarterback on the list who gives the Wolverines hope of beating Ohio State on a regular basis.

Again, it’s not the end of the world for him to potentially miss spring training, but he’ll fall that much further when it comes to challenging McNamara for the starting job. Worse, McCarthy won’t be attending spring training to push McNamara to be a better quarterback. Thankfully, McCarthy is unlikely to miss any games with that shoulder injury.

While Michigan is likely to retreat somewhat after last year, a great quarterback game will make a difference in the Wolverines’ quest to repeat themselves as Big Ten champions. This positional group has experience, but so does their three biggest divisional rivals: Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State. McCarthy could be a total game changer, but luckily they still have McNamara.

Here’s to a speedy recovery for the rising star quarterback for the Michigan program.
