Two professors. A true open world. Legendary Pokemon that can transform into bloody motorcycles. Pokemon scarlet and violet are slowly evolving into some of fall’s most intriguing RPGs. Today, the Pokémon Company made that even clearer with a new trailer that shuts down the game’s antagonists.

Of course, a mainline Pokémon game can only break as much ground as it should. scarlet and violet -Versions slated for a November 18 Switch release follow in the footsteps of their monster-collecting ancestors. But each new iteration (scarlet and violet marks the beginning of the ninth generation) has slightly exceeded the limits. And early footage showed plenty of firsts, including new Pokémon, a new realm, and a new art style. It looks fantastic, or at least fresh, to fans.

It’s blazing fast and goes through a lot of what players can expect from the game.

As revealed in last month’s trailer, Pokemon scarlet and violet casts you as an academy student. Today’s trailer begins with a look at Mela, who leads the “fire brigade” of Team Star, the “school troublemakers.” Everyone Pokemon Game has a “team” – a group of good-for-nothings who always show up in the wrong places and are generally just a nuisance. That seems to be Team Star Pokemon scarlet and violet. That there are different segments of the team, differentiated by type, could make fighting the antagonist team much more interesting than in previous games. (Typically, enemy teams stick to the same old Poison type list.)

The trailer also featured some nicer opponents—including rival Nemona, Elite Four member Geeta, and grass-type gymnast Brassius – in action. And we got a look at three new Pokemon: the rock-type giant crab Klawf, the Fire Spirit-type Ceruledge (calling dibs), and the Fire Psychic-type Armarouge. In addition, Nintendo UK announced a Pokemon scarlet and violet– Theme switch – OLED model. It will be released on November 4th:

Pokemon scarlet and violet are the first games in the series not one, but two professors– the typical mentor NPC for the player character. The first, Sada, dressed all in orange prehistoric-inspired clothing, will appear scarlet. The achingly future-chic Turo, meanwhile, will make headlines violet. The bright red Koraidon and the deep purple Miraidontwo legendary Dragon-type Pokémon will make headlines scarlet and violet each too. Instead of just being wild monsters, you can also ride them humiliatingly (on land, in the air or at sea).

The most significant change, however, is the move to an open-world model. Historical, Pokemon Games were linear romp. They fought their way through eight top-class trainers, so-called Gym Leaders, in a predetermined order. scarlet and violet You can approach them in any order. As my colleague Sisi Jiang pointed out last month, so the three starter Pokémon are theoretically equal for the first time. Pour one out for the Charmander fans of yore, yes, but also Cheers for Quaxlya dimwitted water duck who already has the entire Paldea region (and the rest of the world) against him.
