It’s taken some time, yes, but the Pirates are making the right choice by promoting potential Oneil Cruz to the Majors.
It was always a question of when, not if, Cruz would be promoted to MLB the bucs Minor League System. However, Pittsburgh fans quickly grew impatient with the major league product given a recent string of losses.
A lengthy homestand proved the perfect time to give Cruz another taste of big league action. According to FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray, Cruz is likely to be promoted from the Pirates.
General manager Ben Cherington teased the possibility of promoting Cruz on Sunday, and he was conveniently kept out of the Indianapolis lineup, signaling a decision was near. This smoke signal was actually correct this time.
“There’s a chance, sure,” said Cherington Sunday Morning 93.7 The Fan. “This is a case where development continues no matter what level you are at, including the big leagues.”
What can the pirates of Oneil Cruz expect at the next level?
Promoting Cruz and giving him a stable position in Pittsburgh is a long-term goal and part of the rebuilding process for Cherington, Derek Shelton and co. Cruz has been hot lately, slashing .283/.364/500 with considerable force in the last week-plus.
While Cruz would prefer to play shortstop, the position he’s most comfortable in, his size suggests he could be better as a corner fielder. At 6ft 7, he would easily be the tallest shortstop in baseball if he made his debut there.
“We think he’s a shortstop,” Cherington said. “We added outfield to give him another arrow in his quiver.”
Given where the Pirates stand overall, they have plenty of time to figure out where Cruz fits in best. With a player of Cruz’s caliber, there’s no turning back now.
