Huge rumours: They might not be sellers but buyers?
At 51-51, the Giants are on the precipice of the playoff race while also battling the MLB close sale. You are 4 games away from a wild card spot. For days it has been widely believed that the Giants would actually sell at the trade deadline after a 7-game losing streak. However, they took 3 out of 4 games from the rebuilding Cubs and may be buying them now. That’s what it sounds like, according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand.
Giants Rumors: Why Should They Buy By Deadline?
This ties in with another report earlier today on the Giants’ existence Dark Horse contender for Juan Soto. While they’re unlikely to get Soto, it aligns with Feinsand’s report that the Bay Area team could actually buy and push for the playoffs. They have an aging team that may still have a playoff chase in them.
This makes sense as to why the Giants would want to push for the playoffs one last time before having to push for a big youth movement. The Giants have a strong rotation led by Logan Webb and Carlos Rodon.
Joc Pederson was an All-Star this year. Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt still have some bats in them. Perhaps the greatest need is a shortstop/2nd baseman and an outfielder. Here comes the fit for Juan Soto.
The Giants’ defense is pretty terrible, but with excellent pitching and a strong offense, it can be overcome. I’m not saying the Giants should buy for a shot at another playoff run. Still, it could happen and make sense. If the Giants get a combination of Ian Happ, David Robertson, Willson Contreras, Juan Soto, Brandon Drury or JD Martinez, it would be a very winning deadline for them.
We’ll find out soon, in about 20 hours, what the Giants decide to do at the end of the trading period. Right now it’s a lot of fun pondering these Giants rumors and wondering if they can strike a trade for a big whopper like Juan Soto.
