Controversial comedian Louis CK won big at the Grammy’s 2022which sparked a backlash from the internet and stimulated further discussion about the “abandonment culture”.
Louis CK’s career took a nosedive after sexual misconduct allegations aired by the comedian in 2017, which claimed he allegedly masturbated in front of women after locking them in a room with him. CK’s return to comedy came with the 2020s Sincerely, Louis CK which earned him his third Grammy for Best Comedy Album, following wins in 2012 and 2016.
Reaction to his victory was negative from the majority of people, with much discussion on Twitter about the “abandon culture” and whether CK really faced consequences for his actions.
A parable has been drawn between CK’s victory and last week’s extraordinary scenes with Will Smith at the Oscars. One argument from several users suggests that race has played a key role in the divided reactions to the two stars and how their actions have been viewed by the mainstream.
Political writer Moira Donegan tweeted in disgust, writing that CK’s career had bounced back quickly and wondered if the same was true of his victims.
The negative reaction included prominent video essayist AdequateEmily, who noted that it was “hilariously hollow” that CK, who has complained about abandonment culture, was able to recover from the allegations, seemingly with industry support.
Louis CK’s win reminded one user of a famous quote from Issa Rae, who once described the music industry as “the worst industry I’ve come across.”
An interesting perspective on the win was that it proved there is an abandon culture — and this win for CK is due solely to peers who helped shore up the comedian as what he truly calls a “niche” performer for the represents audience.
Previously, Louis CK’s 2021 nomination had many eyebrows raised even just for CEO Harvey Mason Jr. Said the Recording Academy to defend that the Grammys are “not going to look back at people’s history.”
