Pedro Pascal says the series is ‘in good hands’

Pedro Pascal compared HBO’s TV adaptation of the iconic video game franchise The last of us to the successful series The Mandalorian, which underscores how passionate the creative team on both products are about what they do. Speaking to GQ about the upcoming series, Pascal also revealed that he lacks the right skills to play video games and had to ask his nephew to guide him through the first one The last of us Game.

The last of us The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where society collapsed after a pandemic turned humans into vicious, zombie-like creatures. The game’s story takes place twenty years after the outbreak and follows a smuggler named Joel who is tasked with protecting teenage girl Ellie. Ellie is immune to the deadly disease and Joel must accompany her across the country to a research center hoping to study the girl to find a cure. In the series adaptation, Pascal will play the role of Joe while Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie.

When asked if he’s played the original game that inspires the series, Pascal admitted he’s sadly unable to. As the star puts it, “I tried, you know. And then it was only a matter of minutes before I had to hand it over to my nephew. It really takes a certain kind of skill and I don’t have that.”

Not being able to play according to Pascal The last of us could be a blessing in disguise as he could take a healthy distance from the game’s character to create his own version of Joel. Still, Pascal was amazed at the visuals and storytelling of The last of us, at least the part of the game that he was allowed to see. As Pascal explains it:

“I watched as long as I could up to that day and then I had to leave Florida. I found Joel so impressive – I found the whole thing to be a visually stunning experience. And then I worried that I wanted to imitate too much, which I thought might be right in some cases and then a mistake in others. So I just wanted to create a healthy distance and put more hands on it Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman.”

Although Pascal wanted to avoid becoming too attached to another version of Joe, the HBO adaptation of the popular video game series is being overseen by the game’s creative director, Druckmann The last of us Super fan Mazin. So it’s fair to expect that the upcoming series will stay true to the game’s acclaimed storyline. Still, as Pascal puts it, fans of the game are in for a few surprises when they watch the show. As Pascal puts it:

“There’s a very, very creative way of honoring what’s important and also preserving what’s iconic to the video game experience and also things that you wouldn’t necessarily expect. And then directions that you would expect to work, and maybe not… they do some really smart things is all I can say. It’s similar to the way Jon Favreau and David Filoni to treat The Mandalorianin what way [Mazin and Druckmann] to treat The last of us – it is in good hands because they love it so much. Well, Neil clearly invented the video game, but Craig loves it so much. So it’s really made for the people who love it. And there’s a very intense storytelling for people who might be less familiar.”

The last of us‘ Cast also includes Nick Offerman, Anna Torv, Merle Dandrige, Nico Parker, Gabriel Luna, Jeffrey Pierce, and Murray Bartlett.

The last of us is scheduled to premiere in 2023.
