Peaky Blinders show will be seen at the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games

A sequence from an upcoming stage show, Peaky Blinders, and a performance by legendary local band UB40 are among the highlights of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony in Birmingham.

The sequence from the UK theater show ‘Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby’ will be performed at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on August 8th with a special performance of a newly commissioned track by Laura Mvula inspired by Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’ , which is used as the theme song of the TV show. Written and adapted for the stage by creator Steven Knight, and choreographed and directed by Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, the theater production will have its world premiere on September 27 at the Birmingham Hippodrome as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

Led by TAWBOX Creative Directors Amber Rimell and Bronski, the ceremony will showcase the region’s musical talent past, present and future including Apache Indian, Beverley Knight, Dexys, Goldie, Jacob Banks, Jaykae, Jorja Smith, Laura Mvula and Ash , Mahalia, Musical Youth, Neelam Gill, Panjabi MC, Raza Hussain, Talulah-Eve, The Selecter and UB40.

With set design by Misty Buckley, Birmingham’s multicultural heritage is woven into Monday’s show, including a journey through the city’s changing faces, alongside tributes to Wolverhampton’s 1980s street art scene and a look at music venue Broad St and how it inspired music and fashion worldwide.

Martin Green, Chief Creative Officer of Birmingham 2022 said: “With this Closing Ceremony we wanted to bring together a spectacular line-up of global artists from the West Midlands for an exciting music production to close an unforgettable 11 days of sport and culture. The medley of high-octane performances will celebrate the vibrant energy and cultural heritage of this incredible city as we bring these spectacular home games to a fitting conclusion.”

The closing ceremony also includes a formal handover to the Australian state of Victoria, which will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. It will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer. Peaky Blinders show will be seen at the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games
