Helped by Hardik Pandya’s all-around performance, India beat England by 50 runs on July 7 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton to lead the three-game T20I series 1-0.
Chasing the 199 goal, England’s top order was shattered by Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hardik Pandya first sacked Jason Roy, Bhuvneshwar sent in English skipper Jos Buttler for a golden duck before Pandya also sent in Dawid Malan. Pandya then picked up the dangerous Liam Livingstone, who also went back for a duck to relieve India of his devastating hitting. Sam Curran was his fourth wicket.
Hardik Pandya also hit his first ton in T20 by hitting 51 runs from 33 balls. In doing so, he became the second batsman after the legendary Yuvraj Singh to hit half a century while picking three wickets at the same time. But half a century and a four-wicket haul made him the first player in India to do so.
Meanwhile, Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav played many attacking shots in India’s innings which helped India revive the innings after openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan walked back shortly after being sent off. Hooda and Yadav had scored 33 and 39 runs, respectively. Dinesh Karthik and Axar Patel attempted to finish the innings but were soon dismissed and India scored 198/8 in the end.
From England’s side, Moeen Ali hit 36 runs 20 balls while Chris Jordan tried to save the team with his 26 runs 17 balls but it didn’t help England. Harry Brook played a knock of 28 runs from 23 balls.
Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal each picked up two wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped a wicket.
