Paolo Sorrentino, the Oscar-winning director of The Great Beauty and The Hand of God, will chair the jury at the Marrakech International Film Festival. The popular festival is making a comeback this year after two editions were canceled due to the pandemic. The upcoming festival will take place from November 11th to 19th.
The Sorrentino jury awards the Étoile d’Or to one of 14 full-length films competing at the festival, which aims to showcase emerging filmmakers from around the world. The Chair follows in the footsteps of renowned directors and talents such as Martin Scorsese and Tilda Swinton who have chaired in previous years.
“The Marrakech Film Festival is for me the place where the dream came true to see numerous films with Martin Scorsese and spend days talking about cinema with him and other talented colleagues,” Sorrentino said in a statement. “I believe – I want to believe – that theaters will fill up again and I’m sure there will be many wonderful films coming out soon.”
Helmer said he “wanted to witness this revival from such an iconic place. Discovering the cinema of tomorrow from such an interesting cultural and geographical point of view will be an additional gift. ”
Morocco has one of the most vibrant film cultures and industries in the Arab world and is the scene of many US and international film shoots each year.
An esteemed filmmaker and screenwriter, Sorrentino has screened six films at Cannes including Jury-winning Il Divo, This Must Be the Place starring Sean Penn and Frances McDormand, the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and The Great Beauty. . Oscar-nominated “Youth” starring Michael Caine and Paul Dano. Sorrentino made his TV debut with The Young Pope, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and two Emmy Awards. Sorrentino’s latest feature film The Hand of God won the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Venice Film Festival before earning an Oscar nomination.
