Nationals superstar Juan Soto is on track to be traded in the next 50 hours. It is reported that there are two teams closest to him, the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres. These Soto trade rumors are likely to affect the overall trade market as teams see what is happening and where Soto is being sent. That doesn’t mean that talks between other teams have stopped. The Padres are apparently discussing a backup plan with the Cubs in case they miss Soto.

Heyman is right when he says these players fit the Padres’ needs and interests. The Padres desperately need a right-handed racquet that could offer more power and maybe play first base. Willson could fill that need well and offer the luxury of being a catcher. They would no longer be forced to rely on skinny Eric Hosmer.

It’s also clear the Padres need more help in the outfield, as Wil Meyers, Nomar Mazara, Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham have all underperformed. Taking on All-Star Ian Happ, who hits left-handers and can play outfield, would help them a lot. Your lineup would be more balanced. The best part is that he’s under team control until 23 minutes. This gives the Padres the flexibility in the off-season to not be forced to swap for an outfielder.

Perhaps the best part is that acquiring both players would be a lot cheaper than trading for Juan Soto. There’s also the idea that these two together would match what Juan Soto would offer for the remainder of the season. Of course, you’d rather acquire Juan Soto instead, if that’s possible.

However, it’s clear that the Juan Soto trade rumors will affect the entire MLB as the Padres discuss backup plans with the Cubs over such coveted players.
