Overwatch League player shaken by tweet shot

Losing a job is always an uprooting event, but being fired in public is downright embarrassing, especially when you don’t know it’s coming. That’s exactly what happened this week in the world of over watch League (OWL), with the New York Excelsior team summarily ending main support player Sang-min “Myunb0ng” Seo in perhaps the worst possible way: a damn tweet. And understand this: It happened just hours after the NYXL welcomed a brand new player to the team. whoops
As discovered by The edge Reporter and former kotaku dot com Staffer Ash Parish, the NYXL made the announcement on August 10th Soon-jae “Ansoonjae” Jae had joined the team as the new main support player. Roster changes happen all the time in OWL, sure, but there’s one more person being added the crucial role of keeping everyone alive while increasing the team status effect would give Myunb0ng a much needed break. So that was cool news! I mean why not increase the number of people on your bench? That wasn’t the case, however, as the NYXL tweeted a farewell to Myunb0ng a few hours after the announcement, thanking him for his “dedication and hard work.”
You can probably imagine the surprised Pikachu face Myunb0ng had when this now-deleted tweet hit his tsp. In fact, he was so shaken by the announcement that he responded with a few question marks. Myunb0ng went on and Quote-retweeted the NYXL with another question markwhich appears to indicate that he was not made aware of this sudden termination.
After the NYXL picked up the tweet to say goodbye to Myunb0ng, the team released a statement detailing the matter. The tweet stated that the NYXL “did not properly communicate with the team prior to this announcement.” They apologized to Myunb0ng for the misunderstanding, wished him the best in his future endeavors and promised that this mistake would not happen again.
Myunb0ng cleared that he was “notified during the team feedback session,” that the OWL itself had dropped him, and that a social media and marketing failure led to the unexpected announcement on Twitter. Because of this, Myunb0ng said the news it was him suddenly dropped by the NYXL “feels very unjustified‘ even if it feels incredibly abrupt.
Regardless, the community was stunned by the news. Most shared in utter confusion of what happens while others seemed frustrated by the “mistake” that the NYXL made here. Members of OWL, such as Wizard Mitch Leslie and Houston Outlaws tank Shin “Piggy” Min-jun, tweeted in support of Myunb0ng. Every body else yes pulled the NYXL through the internet filth.
kotaku has reached out to Ansoonjae, Myunb0ng, NYXL and OWL for comment.
