surveillance 2 will be making adjustments to both the matchmaking process and the ranking system in the coming weeks, the latest developer blog posted today. This is good news for anyone who’s spent the months since launch confused or frustrated by the sequel’s ranking system, or who feels that their matches are almost always one-sided (myself included, as evidenced by my latest recording surveillance 2‘s competition mode).

The lengthy blog post assures us that “Blizzard” saw it [our] Feedback on Matches with Large Variations in Skills,” and plans to address our concerns. After explaining some of the reasons I either roll an enemy squad or get rolled by them, the post details what steps to take surveillance 2 takes to fix his matchmaking and ranking issues.

Season 3, which will start sometime next month (no set date yet), will “try to place pairs of players with similar MMR [matchmaking ranking] on every role on every team”, meaning tanks with a huge difference in abilities between them are less likely to be in enemy squads. With just one tank in traditional games, that gap can feel like a chasm, so the goal of the update is to “balance average MMR more evenly between each role, rather than looking broader across the team to even things out.” ” Yes, surveillance 2The current matchmaking system does not guarantee that each role will be matched to an opponent of the same rank.

Next Season will also change how often your rank adjusts in Competitive mode, as the team has heard us loud and clear that it’s annoying to play up to 26 games just to keep your role the same. “Starting with Season 3, you will now receive a competitive update every 5 wins and 15 losses. In the mid-season patch for Season 3, we’re also updating the UI so information about your progress toward a competitive update is always visible.” Praise be to you.

Oh, and seasonal rank drops and rank resets will be thrown out the window starting in Season 4—but don’t expect a full rank reset ever, you absolute animal. “Full rating reset would not create a great experience as it would mean throwing away everything we know about players. This would result in new players being matched against OWL pros, which is about 30 seconds of fun (we experienced this ourselves in internal playtests).”

While I can understand why players would want a full rank reset to get the unpleasant taste of this current ranked system out of our mouths, it’s clear that doing so would cause even more chaos. Let’s just be happy that we’re getting more frequent rank adjustments, a clearer picture of where the heck our rank is going, and better matches going forward. Maybe I can enjoy playing again.
