Outstanding moment: 3-1 win in volleyball match against Wake Forest, Cerchio hits 1,000 kills

As calendar year 2021 draws to a close, Virginia Tech Athletics will spend December celebrating the Hokies’ outstanding achievements over the past 12 months in a campaign called “Moments of Excellence.”

The “Moment of Excellence” campaign will be a look back at historic highlights and memorable achievements in Tech Athletics in 2021. Each varsity sports program will have a standout moment showcased. in December on the official Virginia Tech Athletics website and social media @HokieSports properties.

The volleyball show’s historic win over Wake Forest this fall is billed as their Moment.

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team closed the 2021 season with a win Friday night, beating Wake Forest 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23. Marisa Cerchio also hit a career milestone in his final game as Hokie, scoring 1,000NS kill.

Cerchio becomes the 17th player in school history to achieve this milestone, with Hokie most recently being Kaity Smith from 2017-20. She hit 1,000 kills in the third set to give the Hokies a 5-4 lead. The hitter on the right will end her Hokie career with 1,008 kills.

The Hokies led the set 25-21 as Cerchio scored four kills to lead the Hokies. Technology hit .300 in the first set, a commensurately high. Robinson also had four more kills and hit 0.667, a team-high. Mosley scored five digs in the first episode while Brie Postema 12 more supports.

The second set was all Hokies as they gained an 8-7 advantage and didn’t give up their lead, at one point jumping to a 16-10 advantage. The Hokies also hit well in the second set, recording a hit rate of 0.286, while Cerchio hit 0.600 in the second set. The Tech Block also got hot in Monday, with the Hokies scoring a total of four.

Wake Forest recovered in the third inning, taking a tight 25-22. The Demon Deacons had their best attack in the third set, recording 0.222 hits. Chloe Wilson leads with five kills. Cerchio continued to impress, scoring 5 kills in the third set.

The Hokies won the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set, improving to 12-18 and 3-15 in the ACC game. Wake Forest drops to 15-14, 6-12 in ACC. Cerchio ended her final bout as Hokie with 21 kills, beating her previous career high of 18.

Powell also helped Hokie attack with 10 kills, and Robinson hit 0.389 in four sets with seven kills. Freshman Elayna Dupreyreached a team-high of .455 with five kills. On defense, Postema finished with 15 digs and Mosley 14 more. Postema also scored 46 assists, a point short of her highest season. On the side of the box, Hughes made two single saves, while Cerchio and Robinson made three.

Virginia Tech finished the game with .235 on the day, compared to Demon Deacons’ .160. The two teams are even on the block, both posting a total of eight. The Hokies ended the 2021 season with a victory of the last 2/3 matches.
