Although only a few days of the month-long summer break in Formula 1 have passed and talks about the driver market have only just begun, the F1 world has been buzzing with action following Fernando Alonso’s move Aston-Martin. It all started when Sebastian Vettel announced his exit from Formula 1 at the end of this year. Vettel’s place went to another world champion – Alonso – who left Alpine to take the chance. And just a day after Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso’s deal was revealed, Alpine announced on their social media that they had signed F2 champion Oscar Piastr for their 2023 campaign.

But the drama began when Piastri clarified on his Twitter page that he has not signed a definitive contract giving Alpine the right to say he is now employed under them to race alongside Esteban Ocon. There has been a lot of confusion since then and even Alpine executives are unsure of Piastri’s decision. Alpine and Piastri already have an existing deal that runs until 2023 but it seems the Australian has uncovered some legal loopholes as he is reportedly in the final stages of signing a deal with McLaren for the seat alongside Lando Norris.

While Alpine is embroiled in drama with Oscar Piastri, their team boss Otmar Szafnauer sat down for an interview with El Confidencial, where he expressed extreme confusion over the whole affair. Then Otmar also said that he didn’t have a clear answer as to why Oscar Piastri wanted to switch to another team and not Alpine, even after being under contract with them all along.

Speaking of the permanent contract between the Australian racer and the French team, Otmar Szafnauer said: “Part of the deal allows us to pack Oscar 2023 in our car, hence our press release. There was also an option for 2023 where we could loan him to another team. Actually, we wanted to keep Fernando for another year and borrow Oscar for 2023.

When Otmar was asked his opinion on why Piastr felt the need to switch to a different team than Alpine, he said: “I think that’s a question for Piastri because I don’t understand it either. I’m relatively new to the team, but I like it here.”
