The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing on Friday ended a ratings debacle.

The ceremony attracted “nearly 14 million” television viewers, according to a release from the net– making it one of the least watched films in Olympic history.

Compared to the 23.8 million people who watched the 2018 Winter Game Awards in Pyeongchang, overall viewership dropped by 43%. Only 8.7 million people watch primetime programming with NBC’s Mike Tirico and Savannah Guthrie who led the ceremony, which included a splendid performance presented by the President of China Xi Jinping.

Attendance for the opening ceremony was also significantly lower than last year’s Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in Tokyo, which averaged 17 million viewers during the show.

It seems that the Olympics are not immune to the challenges faced by the lack of fans present, due to the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic. The excitement that normally buzzes through the Olympic stadiums has subsided, resulting in much less dramatic coverage.

The time zones of these winter games also pose a viewership problem, with China hosting their second Olympics in 14 years, the show doesn’t fall on prime time on either coast.

“We look forward to continuing to build on our momentum with the competition tonight and in the weeks to come.”
