Chael Sonnen is one of the top figures in the MMA community and recently analyzed Joe Rogan’s view on changing the UFC judging criteria. Joe Rogan is a successful podcast host and also works as a commentator at the UFC. The judging rules for MMA have been controversial for some time due to various disputed results and alleged early stoppage by the referee.

Joe Rogan discussed the UFC scoring rule with UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling on his recent podcast. Commenting on the podcast, Joe said the judges should consider whether the damage was significant or ground control. There have been various discrepancies about how to score a fight and what counts as a winning performance. The main point of the debate has always been harm vs. control. Rogan made the case for damage, saying damage should be analyzed in a round over control.

Chael Sonnen spoke out on the matter, saying that he agreed with Joe’s stance, saying: “I’m with Sterling and Joe and I know the rules very well. I don’t know if I totally agree that Joe got it wrong and that Sterling himself didn’t know the rule. Maybe they did… See, I’m aware the rule says there’s harm over control, but that’s highly speculative. That’s very open to interpretation and how much damage takes precedence over how much control.”

Chael pointed out that Aljamain won his last fight against Petr Yan by controlling Yan and not dealing him enough damage. Despite his lack of damage, Sterling won the fight and Chael pointed out that simply counting punches might not be the fairest assessment of damage.

Joe Rogan has been criticized by various sports analysts for his recent comments on changes to the UFC’s scoring rules. Joe is one of the outstanding figures in MMA and many analysts are saddened that he doesn’t know the judging criteria. Rogan has been part of UFC since UFC 12 in 1997 and is the promotion’s star color commentator for US pay-per-views.

Heavy MMA‘s Sean Sheehan spoke about Joe’s comment in his most recent tweet, saying Joe was unaware of the judging criteria as the same changes Joe was talking about were made in 2016. Sean said: “Coincidentally, these are the EXACT changes that took place in 2016 that have greatly improved the judging, although a lot of people, like Joe, don’t seem to know about it.”

Many other analysts, such as Showtime Sports’ Luke Thomas, also criticized Joe Rogan, saying it was unfortunate that sports personalities were not familiar with the rules of the sport.
