Omar Apollo never has a problem telling his truth.
The queer singer recently became a man standout on Twitter when a user asked if he was actually a straight guy who queer-baited the LGBTQ community with nail polish and cropped shirts. Apollo clapped back two very explicit answers about what he does in bed with men.
I asked him about his tweets at Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch on Saturday, where he was honored with the TikTok Future Icon Award.
“I said what I said,” Apollo said, smiling. “To be honest, I didn’t even think about it. I was at dinner and saw the tweet and replied and then had dinner. At the end of dinner I looked at my phone and I was like, ‘Oh no.’ It was so funny, my friend’s dad saw it and I was like, ‘Oh no, this is kind of embarrassing.’ But it was great. He really thought it was funny.”
He also told me he was hoping to meet Selena Gomez, who won the Movie Song of the Year award for “My Mind & Me” at brunch. “The Latina girls,” said Apollo, who is among the top new artists nominated at the upcoming Grammys. “We need to have the Latina girls photographed.”
He recalled seeing Gomez in Wizards of Waverly Place. “I was obsessed,” said the 25-year-old “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All)” singer. “I had a crush on someone in the cast.”
That someone, he said, was David Henrie.
And yes, Apollo was introduced to Gomez before the awards ceremony began. See the Latina Girls photo below.
