The OKC Thunder may have to face the tank again this year after No. 2 overall Chet Holmgren suffered a potentially serious foot injury
fans of the Oklahoma City Thunder have endured a couple of miserable seasons and won just 46 games in the last two years, but the payoff should come this year with Chet Holmgren, the second-place overall draft pick.
However, OKC may have to wait a bit longer as the universe has decided they can’t have nice things just yet.
Holmgren, the franchise’s hoped-for future, has suffered a potentially serious foot injury.
Injury to Chet Holmgren: Thunder rookie has ligament damage
“There is concern that Oklahoma City Thunder No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren has suffered ligament damage in his foot and is undergoing further assessments.” Shams Charania tweeted on Wednesday.
A few minutes later, Charania added to the story.
“Research shows Chet Holmgren may have torn ligaments in his foot, sources said. A schedule will be determined on the basis of further evaluations.” he tweeted.
Torn ligaments are definitely not part of a short rehab prognosis. However, we don’t know how big the tears are or what treatment plan the team and players will opt for.
Holmgren appeared to suffer the injury during the weekend’s Crawsover Pro-Am while guarding LeBron James on a quick break.
There were a number of other NBA stars who took part in the weekend’s activities, including LeBron and No. 1 overall winner Paolo Banchero. Holmgren was just the unlucky one to have an injury that potentially affected his 2022-23 season.
Charania also reported that the game Holgrem was attending had to be stopped due to unsafe, slippery course conditions (subscription required).
We’ll have to wait to find out how bad this injury news is, but it’s an unfortunate development for Holmgren and the Thunder.
A five-star contender in high school, Holmgren lived up to the hype at Gonzaga’s college. He was expected to be No. 1 overall before the magic surprised everyone and took Banchero instead. As a result, he fell into the lap of OKC.
