When we talk about NBA awards, Coach of the Year can sometimes get lost. Everyone is looking at the players, but ignoring the plans and gameplay that put them in the best possible position.
Last year, Tom Thibadeau won after leading the New York Knicks with a 41-31 record. He beat Monty Williams from the Phoenix Suns and Quinn Synder from the Utah Jazz.
There are only a handful of games left in the NBA season and the Coach of the Year picture is in the spotlight. There are a few names that should be listed at the top, so put your odds on NBA Coach of the Year.
Monty Williams (October 48)
Williams was runner-up last year, but it would be a disgrace if he was overlooked again this season. The Suns are better than them a year ago and have the best record in the league. Phoenix have been one of the most consistent teams in the league during a tumultuous year due to injury and COVID.
The Suns beat the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference by six games. Even without one of the top 10 players in the league, Williams still manages to take everything from his players and turn them into a well-oiled machine.
JB Bickerstaff (35-23)
The Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the biggest surprises of the season. Although they don’t have a better record than the Grizzlies, they can compete in a much more open and difficult tournament. The Cavaliers can now be the 3rd seed in the East or even the 1st seed – with only a small run.
The Cavaliers are a great story and fit the bill to get this award for their coach.
Taylor Jenkins (41-19)
The Memphis Grizzlies, like the Cavaliers, have been a surprise to many this season. They had the third best record in the western conference and didn’t show up. Memphis was expected to be a playoff team this season and now they are contenders to win it all.
Without the Sun, Jenkins would likely be the favorite for the award. He just couldn’t get there when he was coached in his own conference.
