NSW Floods: Roads closed as Northern Rivers locals prepare for third straight La Nina season

Roads are being cut and bridges have disappeared under flood waters in regional NSW as Northern Rivers business owners prepare for a third straight La Nina season.

The low-pressure storm system that caused flooding in inland NSW earlier this week moved towards the coast on Thursday and Friday, with flood and gale warnings covering much of the east of the state.

Severe thunderstorms forecast on Friday from the NSW-Queensland border to Port Macquarie will extend to the Blue Mountains on Saturday.

Weather has been deluged at the Golden Dog Hotel, the only pub in Glenreagh, a small town in the Northern Rivers between Grafton and Coffs Harbour, after minor flooding hit the Orara River on Friday.

The river was just under five feet high on Friday afternoon, flooding the Orara Way, covering the Bluffs Bridge and blocking the main road into Grafton.

Roads to Coffs Harbor to the north remain accessible and motorists can travel longer distances to Grafton.

Glenreagh’s 900 residents are prepared for flooding, Lestatt Hammond, from the local bakery, told AAP.

“You know how much rain it takes to push the river over (its banks),” she said.

Hammond, a lifelong resident of Glenreagh, said water levels were still well below those reached during February’s floods.
