“Nothing special from Burns. Just persistence, pressure and consistency”: Fighter Kenny Florian gives Gilbert Burns great praise after beating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287

Gilbert ‘Durinho’ Burns extended his winning streak in Miami when he picked up a dominant win over Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal at UFC 287. Masvidal’s remarkable 20-year career ended after the loss as he did as predicted and gave up his gloves. Burns defeated Masvidal by unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 and is currently contending for the welterweight championship.
Nothing special from Burns. Just persistence, pressure and consistency. Masvidal just couldn’t figure it out. The reaction time isn’t what it used to be, but it’s great to see him thriving in this sport after grinding for so long. Burns climbs back up the ladder and gets closer to a title shot.

The Brazilian fighter, 36, who dominated most of the fight, received huge applause from many including former UFC fighter Kenny Florian. Florian appreciated Burns’ simple and tenacious approach throughout the fight, in a tweet he said: “Nothing special from Burns. Just persistence, pressure and consistency. Masvidal just couldn’t figure it out. The reaction time isn’t what it used to be, but it’s great to see him thriving in this sport after grinding for so long. Burns is moving back up the ladder and getting closer to a title shot.”
From the first bell, Gilbert was on point. In the first round, both fighters stood up for most of the round until Burns scored the increasingly important takedown in the last ten seconds and subsequently won the round with two judge cards. Rounds two and three belonged entirely to the Brazilian as he controlled the fight from the ground while also landing some solid combinations of his own.
Gilbert Burns accuses Masvidal of being ‘slippery’
“I know those old tricks these guys do. You, you know what they do? They wake up and take the first shower and they rub lots of lotion on their bodies. The skin absorbs the lotion. After three hours you do it again,” Burns said. “After you do it again, and then you do it again. your body absorbs. And if you start sweating a lot, he sure did. He did it 100 percent. I’ll tell you. Not maybe. No. He did it 100 percent. It was so slippery, I have to hand it to the guy. The guy has all the tricks.”
According to Burns, Masvidal’s alleged graffiti influenced the outcome of the fight. He claims that if Masvidal wasn’t so skilled, he would have grounded him. “100 percent (I would have done him),” Burns continued. “I dominated the guy on the floor. When I have a little less lotion, dude. If I had a little less lotion I could do it.”
Burns is still awaiting news of who he will fight next. Who should the champion fight next? Let us know in the comments section.
