“Nothing brave about it,” blamed George Russell for missing the podium in Montreal » FirstSportz

At the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix George Russell compared poorly to teammate Lewis Hamilton and this was the only race since the season opener in Bahrain in which George Russell was surpassed by seven-time world champion Hamilton. The young Briton, who is currently in his debut year at Mercedes, delivered better results than Lewis Hamilton in the same Mercedes W13, his streak could not be maintained at the Canadian Grand Prix – all because of a missed opportunity during Saturday’s qualifying session.
George Russell’s performance on Sunday was determined by his position on the grid, where he was placed lower than Lewis Hamilton due to a strategic error he made during qualifying. George chose to be the only racer to switch to slicks in the third quarter and it cost him the entire Canadian Grand Prix. Now former F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve has criticized George’s decision as he believes the outcome of the race would have been different if George Russell had opted for slick tires like everyone else.

‘There wasn’t anything brave’: Jacques Villeneuve doesn’t praise George Russell’s unconventional tire choice in Canadian GP qualifiers

George Russell had a good run in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, although both Mercedes drivers had done poorly in the previous practice sessions. But as he climbed up in Q3 after Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were eliminated from the competition, George opted for pole position with a different tire choice to everyone else on the grid.
And when George Russell went out on slicks in slick weather, he couldn’t set a good lap time, putting him in a bad position at the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. While discussing what George Russell did wrong with his tire choice, Jacques Villeneuve said: “There was nothing brave about that. It never would have worked: it was freezing cold, it was still muggy and the riders were even struggling to get the intermediates up front to work. How do you get the temperature in the slicks then?”
He finally concluded: “It cost him (Georg Russel) the podium.”
