Nintendo hunts fan-made Pokémon FPS videos for PC

For the month of posting, Reddit user Dragon_GameDev2 worked on a small side project to imagine a Pokémon game, built using the Unreal Engine, that you played on PC in first person.

While your thoughts may be drifting towards something similar right now Pokemon Snap, Dragon_GameDev2 had more violent plans for this game and instead featured some videos in which the player was dropped Pokémon– landscapes teeming with modern weapons, and the freedom to hunt (and defend against) as many pocket monsters as you like.

While it’s a bit jarring to see someone turn the entire clip into an innocent little Pokémon, complete with blood effects, the basic premise of “Pokemon x FPS” is still interesting enough for everyone that as soon as Dragon_GameDev2 posted some clips of their project on Reddit and YouTube, they explode.

And as we all know, when a Nintendo fan blows up something, Nintendo loves to respond with thanks, admiration, and respect. Just kidding, they took down most of his videos. Even the tweets highlighting the clips have had the footage removed. One of the only places you can still see the game in action—at least where Dragon_GameDev2 themselves uploaded it—is on Reddit:

Really bad, like it always does, because unlike many other major international companies, Nintendo seems completely unwilling — or even unable — to distinguish between their pirated commercial projects and fan-made toys. Out for free and created for fun. For example, this is just the first game in a year-long series Dragon_GameDev2 hopes to complete as they create a new game each month.

And just so we can document this, in case you never realized that legal teams work harder than just checking Kotaku once a week, we didn’t post about this project, we didn’t even mention it in passing, but Nintendo’s attorneys all found it to be the same. It’s not that people need to keep things like this a secret, it’s that Nintendo needs to be cool!

It’s almost a meme at this point, the course of which was predictable and the tragedy that turned out to be. The world discovers a great fan game that someone (or a team) has made, the whole world is ready to enjoy it, Nintendo’s lawyers step in, they take it down and finally we I can’t enjoy it either.
