Could Nintendo intend to create some sort of animated Nintendoverse? The Japanese gaming giant just announced It buys CG animation and motion capture studio Dynamo Pictures, now known as Nintendo Pictures.

Tokyo-based Dynamo Pictures has been around for 30 years, providing CG work and motion capture for games and anime. It recently worked on motion capture for individual 5, kidney replicantand death strandingwhen creating computer graphics for people like Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045Studio Ghibli Earwig and the Witch, and Nintendo’s own Pikmin Short Films.

Nintendo is of course currently making its first theatrical adaptation in decades, the animated one Super Mario Bros. Movie, recently postponed to 2023. While there are no public details to suggest Dynamo was involved in the production of Illumination Entertainment, the timing of the purchase is certainly interesting.

The deal is a full buyout, set to close by October 3rd. Nintendo says it is buying “100 percent of the outstanding shares” so that Dynamo “becomes a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen the planning and production of visual content across the Nintendo Group. The company also adds, rather coolly, “The acquisition will have little impact on Nintendo’s results for this fiscal year.” Poor Dynamo, I’m sure it’s a big deal for him it is fiscal year.

It’s worth mentioning Nintendo tells Fast company last year that it is considering additional animated content after the as yet untitled one Mario film, then a month later has added Illumination’s Chris Meledandri to its Board of Directors.

Now, of course, this might just be a way to bring in-house the production and motion capture of Nintendo games’ introductory animations, cutscenes, and promotional materials. (We reached out to Nintendo to double-check.) But it’s tempting to hope it could be part of larger theatrical release ambitions, perhaps even some TV shows based on the company’s extraordinary lineup of characters.

There, and i checked itthere is never been one Metroid anime What’s crazy, right? (Adi Shankar certainly thinks. And Dynamo did some post-production work Other M) Also, there is no animated series based on the misadventures of Superstar Saga‘s Fawful, the greatest oversight in the universe.

Maybe that can be corrected now. Right Nintendo? Nintendo buys animation studio that worked on Death Stranding
