Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a statement, “Nicole Kidman has enchanted audiences for decades with the boldness of her artistry and the glamor of a screen icon.

“She is a force who is both brave in her decisions and brave in every performance.”

The prize is the “highest award for a film career” and has already been awarded to Orson Welles, Bette Davis and Alfred Hitchcock.

Kidman rose to fame in the 1989 film Dead Calm and soon starred opposite Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder the following year.

“When you look at her work, it’s so extraordinary,” he said.

“Not everything has been commercially successful because, like a real artist, she sometimes wants to challenge herself.

“Sometimes she ends up in things that people don’t really want to see, other times she’s not even brilliant at things.

“But she’s out there testing herself and challenging herself all the time.

“So that’s a great achievement.”
