Everyone dreams of it Nicolas Cage in the first trailer for A24’s comedy-drama Dream scenario. The crazy film from the writer/director Kristoffer Borgli plays the Oscar winner as Paul Matthews, an unhappy, ordinary family man who rises to international superstardom when he appears in the minds of millions of sleeping strangers. Eventually, these dreams turn into nightmares filled with Cage madness, quickly turning Paul’s fame into infamy. In the trailer you can see Paul struggling with his new fame while trying to live a normal life while chaos reigns in everyone’s minds.
Paul’s day begins harmlessly, like any other day of the week. He doesn’t know that he has already appeared in everyone’s dreams the night before and has been running through the dreams randomly, whether there is an earthquake or a car accident. Soon, people around the world are thrilled to meet this “remarkable nobody,” and he goes from a quiet life to constant recognition, interviews, and photo shoots. Compared to his more bombastic recent roles in films like Renfield or MandyCage is very awkward and meek as Paul, who is simply not used to the attention he is suddenly receiving. He thinks this finally makes him a really cool dad.
However, at the beginning of the nightmare sequences, Cage is given the freedom to let off steam. The dreams in which Paul appears begin to falter and people begin to see him as a monster. In one dream he hits a student in the head with a blunt object, in another he marches with comically large steps towards a girl in her room and smiles like a madman. Paul quickly becomes aware of the darker side of fame as his reputation is unfairly tarnished by all the terrible things he cannot control. As a pariah, he and the rest of his family must deal with the consequences, even as their relationship is tested.
