Nico Hulkenberg will be driving a Formula 1 car again this week at the Hungaroring for a Pirelli tire test. While the rest of the paddock is already on vacation, Aston-Martin stayed in Budapest for two test days. Lance Stroll will drive on Tuesday, Nico Hülkenberg will take over Sebastian Vettel on Wednesday.

Since the end of his Renault deal in 2019, the German has not had a permanent seat in motorsport. Since then, his appearances have been sparse and infrequent, and his options have been limited to whenever an Aston Martin driver was unable to race. After four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel tested positive for Covid in March, Hülkenberg has competed in two Grand Prix this year. He was unable to compete in the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, so Hülkenberg came on for him.

Could this be a good chance for Nico Hulkenberg?

He finished ahead of works driver Stroll in both races, but did not collect any points. Vettel then decided to return to action in Australia while Hulkenberg resumed his position as reserve and development driver. If the 34-year-old had any hopes of a full-time job following Vettel’s decision to retire, it was quickly dashed. Aston Martin didn’t hesitate to confirm that two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso would replace one veteran with another.

The Spaniard’s departure from Alpine came as a surprise as he appeared firmly attached to the team he had returned to after a brief absence from F1. “This Aston Martin team clearly puts in the energy and commitment to win and as such is one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1 today.” said the Spaniard.

“I would know [owner Lawrence Stroll] and Lance for many years and it is very evident that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula 1. I have watched the team systematically attract great people with winning pedigrees and I have been aware of the tremendous commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone. No one in Formula 1 today demonstrates greater vision and absolute commitment to victory and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.” concluded Alonso.
