Nia Long had fans who recalled her notoriously reminiscent impromptu slap given to Taye Diggs during her planned intimacy and argument scene, “The Best Man.”
Long uploaded a black and white photo of herself with her former love interest on screen as she posed with duck lips side by side with Diggs showing nothing but teeth.
“I’ve been down since day 1 @tayediggsinsta THE BEST MAN FINAL CHAPTERS!!! Let’s go!!! @peacocktv December 22nd [kiss emojis]”
Many fans showed their enthusiasm for the 1990s TV series-turned-movie in 2022 with posts in Long’s comments section such as:
“I’m ready, Jordan and Harper”
“Sooo looking forward to it!”
“I can barely wait for it!”
Others chose to jokingly bring up Long and Diggs’ punch encounter, which became an iconic scene from the film that’s still referenced over two decades later.
“Don’t hit him again, sis [laughing emoji]”
“Sister, will you hit him again?”
“That slap was epic!! What did the 5 fingas say about the face!”
During the 1999 film’s climax, Diggs’ character Harper Stewart was on his way to a date with Long’s character Jordan Armstrong with the idea of a love affair. To Armstrong’s surprise, Stewart turned up drunk with a black eye caused by his best friend Lance Sullivan, played by Morris Chestnut, after discovering that Stewart, who was his best man, had been intimate with his future wife Mia Morgan , portrayed by Monica Calhoun.
In the scene, Stewart blamed Armstrong for wanting an exclusive copy of the book, which was passed around her circle of friends and ended up in the hands of Sullivan.
Without taking his tone or disrespect, Armstrong gave Stewart a big slap in the face, which both Long and Diggs have publicly stated shouldn’t happen.
In an Unsung Hollywood interview with TV One, Long revealed that he read the scene and initially felt something was wrong.
“There was just something off the page, the moment was there but the words weren’t there, and so I said, ‘You know what, let’s just do it.'” Long said.
“She threw the shit out of me like the real thing. You get a moment where I go, ‘wooo’ and I stuck with it,” Diggs said.
He continued: “I was mad! I was like, ‘I’m never going to work with her again, how unprofessional’ and then when I saw it on screen, we were cool after that day.”
It’s safe to say that this was the best decision Long could ever make, as it has become one of the most memorable scenes in the film.
