NFL readjusts COVID-19 protocols: reported unvaccinated players no longer have to be tested daily

In just a few short days, the NFL will know the remaining 4 teams have a place to attend Super Bowl LVI. With the division round this weekend, the federation has decided to once again tweak its COVID-19 protocols. Last month, the league shortened the quarantine period for all players regardless of vaccination status, and this week, the NFL is taking it a step further.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL sent a memo to the eight teams still alive in the knockout stages with updated COVID-19 testing protocols. According to Pelissero, the NFL has removed the distinction between vaccinated and unvaccinated players, meaning unvaccinated players will no longer have to be tested daily.

While daily testing is no longer available, all players and level staff will be subject to: Advanced symptom testing, symptom-based testing, and targeted surveillance testing. According to Pelissero, those with the NFL and NFLPA are seeing the wave of the Omicron variant dwindling, and that new targeted testing is working with a shortened quarantine. Pelissero reports that of all the unvaccinated players on the playoff teams that are still playing, only about a dozen players have not yet contracted the coronavirus.

It looks like the NFL is close to wrapping up a safe and successful season once again, but not everyone is out of the woods. While this update means we might see fewer negative tests, a player could still test positive over the weekend and miss out on a game.
