An NFL insider thinks Sean Payton could be a factor in what the Dallas Cowboys do in regards to the head coach position.

The Dallas Cowboys once again wondering what happened in the knockout round. After their Wild Card loss to the San Francisco 49ers, all eyes were on head coach Mike McCarthy, who had some questionable time management decisions and game calls. So, what will Cowboys owner Jerry Jones do as a sideline boss?

Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi shared his thoughts on the podcast “The GM Shuffle,” wondering if New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton could make Jones’ decision on what to do with McCarthy or not.

Can Sean Payton make the decision of the Cowboys head coach?

Payton remains under contract with the Saints until the end of the 2026 season, by He signed a five-year contract extension with the team in 2019.

The Cowboys overcame a 23-7 deficit against the 49ers to give them their chance to win the game with a touchdown in the final seconds of regulation. It certainly looked as if they were gaining traction, but a run up by quarterback Dak Prescott sank Dallas. Without any waiting time, the Cowboys need to wait for the referee to spot the ball to hit it. Prescott handed it over to his offensive lineman and by the time Prescott made the ball after the dot, the game clock has expired.

It will be interesting to see what the Cowboys do regarding the head coach position. Even if McCarthy stays, Dallas must brace for the possibility of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore leaving this season’s head coaching jobs.

As is the case with every season, there are conspiracies surrounding the Cowboys entering the 2022 tournament year, especially after another early playoff.
