NFL Insider Reveals What Turned Baker Mayfield Against Browns

The Deshaun Watson trade wasn’t why Baker Mayfield turned against the Cleveland Browns.

Although many people will speculate that Deshaun Watson’s trade with the Houston Texans was the straw that broke the camel’s back, Baker Mayfield’s relationship with the Cleveland Browns had already deteriorated a few weeks earlier.

ESPN’s Jake Trotter reported that Mayfield’s failing relationship with the Browns was almost entirely due to Odell Beckham Jr.’s mid-regular-season drama.

“After Beckham’s father publicly ripped Mayfield apart and speculation grew about Beckham’s exit, several players lobbied for Cleveland to keep OBJ on the team,” Trotter wrote.

It became very clear how popular Beckham was in the Browns’ locker room, creating another rift between the struggling quarterback and the rest of the faltering AFC North franchise.

“As one source put it, the way Beckham left Cleveland with some teammates has ‘poisoned the well’ for Mayfield,” Trotter continued.

While Beckham has tasted Super Bowl glory with the Los Angeles Rams, he and Mayfield are eagerly awaiting what’s next for them next NFL season.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s fallout led to Baker Mayfield turning on Cleveland Browns

Search. The Beckham drama didn’t help Mayfield’s case to a longer run with Cleveland, but he seemingly got it all wrong when it came to being a franchise quarterback in this league. He may have felt the need to play with a rock-sized chip on his shoulder, but he won the Heisman Trophy and was the No. 1 overall in Oklahoma for a reason. Mayfield was never a scrub.

With the Browns having new leadership up top and on the sidelines, that wasn’t the regime that drafted him. While his underdog persona played well at times in Cleveland, it ultimately led to his downfall. It has helped keep him long without a seat in the game of NFL quarterback musical chairs. At this point, the Browns are best served by cutting him just to get out of this mess.

Ultimately, Mayfield can still thrive in this league, but he’ll never have the kind of free moves he once had from Oklahoma. He may have to take advantage of that underdog mentality again. Although more than five times that could bring us back to that exact point in the years to come, it will dictate how he mentally adapts if he has staying power in the NFL.
