NEWTON (CBS) — Newton residents say pellets fly onto their property, causing damage and scaring them to go into their own backyards. “It’s a hole in our fence,” West Newton’s Jackie Schrader said. “We think it came from his airgun, which shot through.”
Schrader says she and her family are afraid of the neighbor who lives behind her house and has set up a makeshift airgun range.
“If he misses the backboard, it becomes our property,” Schrader said.
Bruce McKee showed WBZ the airgun that caused all the excitement. It shoots .30 caliber pellets. “It’s called a PCP pistol. It’s just compressed air,” McKee said.
The 51-year-old is a trained carpenter, but likes to shoot as a hobby. “It’s just relaxation. Some people like to read books, I like to take pictures,” McKee said.
But his love of airguns fills the hearts of some of his neighbors with fear.
“I called the police several times,” Dayanne Leal said. “When the police come, he stops and the next day he does the same thing again.”
Newton Police say McKee is not doing anything illegal, but now city officials are taking steps to change Newton’s gun ordinance.
“We are looking to add an amendment to this ordinance that will cover the levy of airguns, airguns and BB guns,” Newton Councilwoman Andrea Kelly said.
Several neighbors have complained about the shootings and lodged complaints with the police, and many are genuinely afraid to take their children into their yard for fear someone might get hurt.
“We stopped coming here. We’re scared,” Schrader said. “We don’t know what’s going to happen.”
McKee said he never missed the target or the woods beyond.
Schrader said police were investigating a hole in her fence. “We had officers look at it and said it was definitely a projectile coming from this property. I’m shivering. nerve wracking. Causes a lot of fear.”
The matter will go before the full city council on Monday.
