New York Yankees, need space on roster, change Nick Nelson to Philadelphia Phillies

NEW YORK – Missing positions on the 40-man list to defend prospects ahead of next month’s draft winter meeting, New York Yankees trade right Nick Nelson for Philadelphia Phillies on Friday with the small league catcher Donny Sands.

New York received small midfielder TJ Rumfield and left winger Joel Valdez from the Phillies.

The 25-year-old Nelson has been trailing 0-2 with an ERA of 8.79 in two starts and nine saves in six appearances this season. He made it through 22 out of 14 innings of 1/3.

Nelson suffered 3-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 5 starts and 24 appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He made his major league debut in 2020 and was 1-2 with an ERA of 6.43 in two seasons.

Sands, 25, split the season with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting .261 with 16 doubles, 18 home hitters and 56 RBIs.

Rumfield, 21, hit .250 with seven RBIs at Clearwater low-A in his first season after he was knocked out by Philadelphia in the 12th round of this year’s amateur competition.

Valdez, 21, drew 1-1 with an ERA 1.63 in 15 starts for the DSL Phillies Red.
