New home care package scheme to help elderly Australians living at home. This is how your family can earn money

Australians with aging relatives can access a program to help them live independently at home for longer.

It’s designed to relieve the stress of worrying about how they’re coping on their own.

John and Thelma Batze were married for sixty years. When Thelma died last year, she was living at home.

“When you get to be our age and things go wrong, you just don’t realize you need nurturing,” Batze told 7NEWS.

With the help of carers like Cheryl Hampton, the Batzes stayed together despite illness and health.

Now Hampton has Batze’s ear, and she’s helped him stay in his own home and live the life he wants.

“It’s nice to see people live in their own homes and get a service that they need,” Hampton told 7NEWS.

“It’s company, camaraderie – everything comes under care.”

For thousands of older Australians, home help is the perfect alternative to elder care.

Home care package provider Five Good Friends Simon Lockker told 7NEWS, “People can get anywhere from $9,000 to $53,000 in financial assistance a year from the government.”

By June 2023, more than 275,000 home care packages will be available.

  • Level one is for basic support, including gardening, washing, or helping around the house.
  • Level two is for those who want to be independent but need help with shopping, transportation or personal hygiene.
  • Stage three may need home modifications, social support, and help with medication.
  • Level four includes daily high-needs assistance, similar to what a caregiver would provide at home.

Anyone over the age of 65 is eligible and over 50 for Indigenous Australians.

All people need is an assessment from the aged care assessment team – a personal assessment by a team of medical, nursing and allied health professionals who study the needs of older people and make recommendations for government-funded care and support.

Applications for an ACAT are made through the government portal My Aged Care.
