Unlike previous seasons of Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte follows the early life of the much-loved title character.

India Amarteifio plays a younger version of Golda Rosheuvel’s astute Queen Charlotte, who was introduced to viewers at the 2020 premiere of Bridgerton.

The new trailer, released on Friday, begins with Queen Charlotte wondering why King George (Corey Mylchreest), the King of England, and his royal family want her to marry the king in an arranged marriage.

“It’s time we were united as a society,” Princess Augusta (Michelle Fairley) tells the young queen in the trailer, insisting she make “as many babies as possible.”

The spin-off prequel focuses on young Queen Charlotte’s “rise to fame and power”.

The series follows her journey as her marriage to King George “sparked both a great love story and societal change, creating the world of sound inherited by the characters in Bridgerton,” according to Netflix.

Queen Charlotte is later seen attempting to escape the royal grounds by climbing over a wall as she confronts King George himself.

“I realize you have no reason to like me,” he later says.

“But if you give me an evening of your time, you might hate me a little less.”

Clips of steamy love scenes, choreographed dance numbers in a grand ballroom, nefarious courtiers and a lavish royal wedding are teased throughout the trailer as Queen Charlotte tries to navigate her new marriage and her place in history.

Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh and Ruth Gemmell will reprise their Bridgerton roles on the series, along with new characters played by Fairley, Sam Clemmett and Freddie Dennis.

Fans of the series were quick to take to social media to express their excitement.

“*screams in high English society*,” joked one on Instagram.

“Damn, I’m about to fall in love with another fictional character,” said a second.

“The way I screamed so loud. I CAN’T WAIT,” said another.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will be available to stream on May 4th.
