Netflix Teases Johnny Manziel Documentary After Manti Te’o Special

After the successful Manti Te’o special, Netflix has teased a Johnny Manziel documentary.

Given the overwhelming success of the Manti Te’o special, Netflix released a teaser on Twitter, hinting that a Johnny Manziel documentary is in the works for sports fans everywhere.

While Te’o was the national runner-up’s top defensive line during the 2012 college football season, his catfishing history really made the former Notre Dame linebacker a household name. It largely derailed its once promising NFL career. As fate would have it, that same season he finished second in the Heisman Trophy behind Manziel, whose career also went awry.

Here’s the tweet sent out by Netflix signaling that a Johnny Football documentary is in the works.

The 2012 Texas A&M Aggies may not have been as good as the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but it was still a very special season for Gig Em Nation as it was their first year playing in the SEC. After a narrow opening-weekend home loss to Florida, Texas A&M ended the season 11-2, including a surprise win over eventual national champions The Alabama Crimson Tide.

This was the game where the redshirt freshman quarterback made his mark. His touchdown pass-turned-bobble was the unforgettable game of the Aggies’ upset victory over the Crimson Tide. Texas A&M ranked fifth in the country that year, with Manziel becoming the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. After that, things began to unravel for Johnny Football.

While he found great success as a redshirt sophomore, concerns off the field led to his retirement from the NFL after just two seasons Cleveland Browns. Substance Abuse and Other Circumstances had seemingly ended Manziel’s football career before it had even really started. His rise to prominence and then his decline was unlike anything we’ve ever seen from a college star.

It will be difficult to top the Te’o documentary, but the full story of Manziel needs to be told.
