Netflix anime Tekken: Bloodline gets a release date and an encouraging trailer

Netflix has set a release date for its anime adaptation of Namco’s famous fighting game series: Tekken: bloodline Premiering on August 18th.

A new trailer picks up where the first teaser left off, showing protagonist Jin Kazama training with his ruthless grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, and competing in the King of Iron Fist tournament in hopes of atonement for his mother Jun Kazama’s death to avenge the hands of the mighty ogre.

In addition to the previously seen characters Paul, King and Kazuya, the trailer introduces us to some other Iron Fist contestants: Leroy Smith, Julia Chang, the assassin Nina Williams, Ling Xiaoyu and Jin’s rival Hwoarang (who looks very fresh-faced in an old-school outfits).

Over the montage of footage, Heihachi offers an ominous narration: “Kazama. Think of your helplessness when Ogre killed your mother. To defeat him, you must eliminate the Kazama pacifism and stoke your Mishima fire. I’ll tear you down completely, then I’ll build you up again. Your body will be a weapon. The Mishima style is the only way.”

The plot seems to lean heavily on the events of 1997 Tekken 3, if you are not supposed to follow it exactly. (Leroy, for example, doesn’t appear until much later in the games.) It’s a wise choice: Jin is a classic tragic hero haunted by his holy mother and evil father Kazuya, with powerful motivations that could easily be corrupted by the iconic villain Heihachi. As a framework for undoubtedly endless battle scenes, it’s about as solid as you can get.

In a recent promo for the anime, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada boasted that the games have the “longest-running storyline” in the entire video game medium. In other words, there’s a lot here for Netflix to work with – and so far the creative team behind the show (who remain unnamed) seems to be making the right decisions.
