NBA COVID rise: Adam Silver says league has no plans to pause season, 90% of cases Omicron

The recent surge in COVID-19 caused by the super-infectious variant of Omicron has changed the course of this NBA season. Seven matches have been postponed so far, most likely in doubt, and more than 100 players and coaches participated in the health and safety protocols of the tournament.

But despite the growing concerns, the league has no plans to stop the game. NBA commissioner Adam Silver joined ESPN’s “NBA Today” on Tuesday to discuss the current situation, and talk “There are no plans to pause the season.”

“We’ve looked at all options, of course, but to be honest, we’re having a hard time coming up with the logic behind pausing right now as we look at these circumstances. tear the country apart right now – put the rest aside of the world,” said Silver. “I think we’re finding ourselves where we knew we were going in the last few months. And that is to say, this virus won’t be eradicated and we’re going to have to learn to live with it. it. I think that’s what we’re going through in the league right now.”

While there won’t be an official halt to the game, further schedule changes may be required as things develop. The tournament is Make a backup plan for the big Christmas holiday, which is said to have five marquee games. However, 8 out of 10 teams currently have players following health and safety regulations, and some stars like Kevin Durant and Trae Young maybe not at Christmas. If changes must be made, the league will prioritize the national TV time slots 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8 p.m. ET.

Additionally, Silver notes that the Omicron variant has become “out-of-the-box” and is responsible for “about 90%” of the league’s current COVID-19 cases. As the situation evolves, Silver said his current focus is on getting vaccinated players up for a booster shot.

“We have about 97 percent of our players vaccinated,” Silver said. “In my view, I’d rather focus on 97 percent than three percent, and incidentally many of the three percent have now received COVID, so they’ve developed antibodies. For me, the focus right now is on boosters for the 97 percent of the players that are vaccinated. Of the players that qualify for the boost, we’re at 65 percent. Ideally, I’d like that number. also up to 97%. That’s what we’re focusing on right now.”
