National Geographic acquires Amazon documentary ‘Territory’ in Sundance

National Geographic Documentary Films has acquired the rights to the Sundance documentary “The Territory” directed by Alex Fritz and produced by Darren Aronofsky and directed by Sigrid Dyekjaer “The Cave”.

The film follows – and is partly filmed by – the native Uru-eu-wau-wau of the Amazon rainforest, who fight desperately against increasing deforestation by illegal miners. and non-indigenous farmers encouraged by the far-right policies of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. Shot over three years, the film includes footage taken by indigenous activists themselves as they seek to expose the truth.

“The Territory” is the documentary debut of Alex Fritz, with Uru-eu-wau-wau activist Txai Suruí as executive producer. Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures co-produced the film with Dyekjaer, Will N. Miller, Lizzie Gillett,
Gabriel Uchida and Passion Pictures also produced.

The producers negotiated a deal with National Geographic, who would release the film in theaters ahead of its online debut.
