Nathan’s hot dog contest record

Joey Chestnut has been unbeatable in the Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Contest for over a decade, but what’s his record for hot dogs eaten?

For well over a decade, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest almost wasn’t much of a competition thanks joey chestnut. Arguably the greatest competitive eater who ever lived was a dominant force in the Coney Island contest held annually on the Fourth of July, and no one has apparently been in their stratosphere when it comes to that contest.

Those unfamiliar with Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest may not know the rules, but they’re pretty simple. 20 contestants must eat as many hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes (a time officially set since 2008). There are penalties for messy eating and partially eaten dogs and buns are counted in eighths when fractions are needed.

What made Joey Chestnut so unbeatable in this competition, however, was the outrageous and record-breaking numbers he posted at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest. But what’s his record of entering the 2022 competition if he’s the big favorite again?

Joey Chestnut Record for Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest

The Joey Chestnut record for hot dogs eaten in the current 10-minute format isn’t hard to remember since he didn’t set it until 2021 when he consumed an unreal 76 hot dogs and buns. However, he has been consistently breaking the world record for some time now.

Before the switch to 10 minutes, Chestnut held the 12-minute world record in 2007 with a total of 66 hot dogs and buns. Then in 2009 he made a mark that lasted for some time when he took down 68 dogs in 10 minutes.

He equaled that record in 2012 but eventually broke it in 2013 with a total of 69. He has since broken it again in 2016 (70), 2017 (72), 2018 (74), 2020 (75), and 2021 (76). It’s no wonder he’s only lost the competition once since 2007, considering he seemingly breaks his own world record every time he comes to the table in Coney Island.
