Nam Karen makes racist comments to the car wash owner in Viral TikTok

A viral TikTok showed a white man making racist statements to the owner of a car wash in Michigan when he was asked to move his car during a snowstorm. At least one commenter called the man “Karen.”

TikTok was posted on Friday by Ali Turfe (@westborncarwash25073), who owns Westborn Carwash in Dearborn, Michigan. Turfe wrote in the caption, “Car wash closed due to blizzard, asking customer to move car so we can plow, here’s his response.”

The clip shows a man wearing a hoodie and jeans getting into his car. Before driving, he told TikToker, “No, you’re from another country, so when you come here, you should be grateful that we allowed you to come here and work.”

He continued, “If you go back to your country, you know what it’s going to be like.”

In the video, Turfe replies: “Where is my country? Do you know where I was born and raised? ”

As of Monday, TikTok had more than 188,800 views. “Mr. Karen where is he from,” wrote one commenter. “There’s not a single thought in his mind,” another added.

In a phone call with the Daily Dot, Turfe said that his car wash was closed because of the snowstorm, and that he hired a company to plow. Company protocols required that the plot be completely empty in order to be plowed, so he cut it out.

The man appears to have snuck through the cones to try to use the vacuum cleaner that was turned off during the day. “I approached the car and said, ‘Sorry, sir, it’s closed and it’s snowing. I have a company coming in to plow a lot and I need you to move this car,” said Turfe.

According to Turfe, the man started cursing him and refusing to move his car. Then he started calling out racial taunts Turfe.

“He got out of the car to get close to me and I don’t know if he had a weapon so that’s when I pulled out my phone,” Turfe said.

“This is my hometown and it’s a very diverse community,” Turfe said. “It is shocking to actually encounter a situation like this.” He added that he hopes the video exposes him to how he talks to other civilians, “that’s just not true.”

“At the end of the day, we should all treat each other with love and respect,” Turfe said.
