Myanmar’s junta chief Min Aung Hlaing vows to crush opposition forces

The military, known as Tatmadaw, celebrated the second year since the elected government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was toppled on February 1, 2021, with a parade of troops and weapons in the capital Naypyidaw.

Anti-coup protesters took to the streets in Myanmar on Sunday morning carrying signs reading “Uprooting Fascist Military”.

In his speech, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing rejected any talks with the “terrorist” opposition. A five-point peace plan by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations calls for talks on all sides, but little progress has been made so far.

“I want to say that Tatmadaw will no longer consider negotiations with the terrorist group and its supporters for killing innocent people… and will crush them to an end,” he said.

The coup plotters in Myanmar tried to break the resistance. But a year later, it's stronger than ever

The junta has accused opposition militants of killing civilians and security forces in its resistance campaign, while activists say the military has killed hundreds in raids since the coup.

The ousted government’s shadow government, the Government of National Unity (NUG), said Sunday the people of Myanmar will root out the military and its fascism.

“Together with the souls of our lost heroes, we will fight to the bitter end,” said NUG spokesman Dr. Sasa in a statement.

Violence has gripped Myanmar since the military seized power, turning a decade of timid democratic and economic reforms on its head.

More than 1,700 people were killed and nearly 13,000 arrested, according to rights group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Military authorities said the AAPP numbers were exaggerated.
