“My parents were high…” – Dale Steyn reveals the funny reason behind his middle name “Willem” » FirstSportz

Former South African and one of the top fast bowlers Dale Steyn revealed a hilarious reason for his middle name ‘Willem’ on Sunday July 31. According to Steyn, he believes the name “Willem” was given to him by his parents, who were tall.

When South African media outlet Ashraf Garda took to Twitter to ask its followers about their names and what they mean, Steyn was among them to share a brief story about his middle name.

Garda posted this on Twitter: “What’s in your name? My name Ashraf is of Arabic origin and means noble!” See his post below:

Steyn responded with, “My middle name is Willem and I honestly think my parents were high when they made that call.” See his post below:

Notably, “Willem” is also a Dutch name and Germanic. It corresponds to the English name “William”.

Dale Steyn’s international career

Several cricket experts consider Dale Steyn one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. Since 2008, he has consistently topped the ICC list of top Test bowlers.

The 39-year-old made his debut against England in 2004. In his career he has taken over 400 wickets with an average of just over 22. In ODIs he has almost 200 wickets with an average of 26.

In 2014 he was named one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the year. He was also named ICC Playtester of the Year in 2008 and 2009.

He retired from all format international cricket on 31 August 2021. He is currently the Fast Bowling Coach for the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.
