It was a day for the all-rounder because it was a day for Andre Russell. With his contribution in every division, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 54 runs on Saturday May 14 at Pune’s MCA Stadium.
KKR opted to bat first and hit a competitive 177 runs after Sam Billings and Andre Russell’s 34 and 49 respectively. SRH’s Umran Malik was the side’s highest wicket taker with three wickets in his four overs.
SRH responded with opener Abhishek Sharma, who scored 43 of 28 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes before giving his wicket to Varun Chakravarthy.
A fuller delivery down the middle and Abhishek Sharma went for a big slog sweep but got a huge top edge. The ball flew in the air and Sam Billings ran to the right for a good catch.
SRH skipper Kane Williamson again failed to make runs by falling back with 9 balls from 17 after Andre Russell bowled him. Rahul Tripathi was caught and bowled by Tim Southee.
But Aiden Markram played good innings of 32 off 25 with 3 sixes, but it didn’t help SRH. He was later bowled by Umesh Yadav. Nicolas Pooran was also caught and bowled by Sunil Narine.
SRH falters after just 123 runs
SRH ended up just 123 runs, losing 8 wickets in his 20 overs. Russell took three wickets and conceded 22 runs in his four overs with a save rate of 5.50. Tim Southee picked up two wickets while Umesh Yadav, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy each sunk a wicket.
